"Kanfei Yona" Operation

With the arrival in Israel of 450 immigrants from Ethiopia on August 28th, the operation “Kanfei Yona” (“Dove’s Wings”) reached completion. This operation started three years ago, when the Israeli Government decided to bring to Israel the thousands of Falashmura who had stayed in a temporary camp in the city of Gondar. The task was entrusted to the Jewish Agency, which brought to the country 7000 Ethiopian immigrants. After their arrival to Israel, the immigrants integrated in absorption centers of the Jewish Agency and the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption.

The Jewish Agency had operated for many years to bring Ethiopian immigrants to Israel. It was responsible for “Operation Moses” and “Operation Solomon” in which about 22,000 immigrants arrived from Ethiopia. The chairman of the Jewish Agency, Natan Sharansky, says: “this is an exciting and historical moment, and with the completion of the “Kanfei Yona” Operation, we are closing a circle that has lasted about 3000 years.”

To mark this historical event, the CZA would like to congratulate the new immigrants and the Jewish Agency. We are happy to display some images of Ethiopia from our Photograph Collection.
