Yom Kippur War

Forty years have passed since the Yom Kippur War, and even though the CZA holds very little documentation about the 1970's, we do have a series of photographs taken during those years. The photos were taken by the photographer Teddy Kandel, and his collection transferred to the CZA.

Teddy Kandel was born in 1920 in Dresden, Germany. As a child he was a member of the youth movement Hashomer Hatzair. He immigrated to Palestine shortly before the Second World War. Kandel was one of the founders of Kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan and specialized in electronics. Photography began as a hobby for him, and only later became a profession. His photos were published in many newspapers in Israel and abroad, and won prizes in various photo exhibitions. With the establishment of an Israeli television network, he became one of the first photographers of the news department. He died in 1981.

As a member of Kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan, which is located near the northern border, Kandel found himself close to the battle front against Syria. He documented the events in the north during the Yom Kippur War and immediately after it. Here are some photos from his collection.
