New from the CZA: Herzl־Online

Publish Date

The Central Zionist Archives is proud to announce the launch of "Herzl־Online", a comprehensive digital platform that brings Theodor Herzl's diaries and the manuscript of his novel "Altneuland" to audiences worldwide.

For the first time, users can view the original manuscripts exactly as Herzl wrote them, complete with drafts, corrections, and crossed־out passages, while seamlessly navigating between the original text, faithful German transcription, and translations into Hebrew and English. The site also features links to hundreds of related documents, certificates, and photographs from the Archives' collections, providing rich historical context.

This ambitious project was led by Suzanne Berns, Curator of the Theodor Herzl Archive, with digitization by Ardon Bar־Hama, and made possible thanks to the vision and dedication of George Blumenthal of New York.

The high־quality digital reproductions of the manuscripts and documents offer an unprecedented opportunity to engage with history through the original texts. Users can search for specific words and phrases, compare different versions, and discover why certain sentences were deleted. By examining how subtle changes in wording shift meaning, anyone can step inside the mind of the founder of the Zionist movement.
